I am a Rochester native who actually took my very first lessons at Schmitt Music. I started with organ lessons, & eventually added piano. I also studied percussion from 5th grade through college.
I have a degree in Music Education (Instrumental) from Wartburg College, with my major instrument being Piano, & a minor in Organ. I was a member of the Wartburg College Concert Band, which gave me the opportunity to travel to Europe during my freshman year. While on that tour, I was a featured soloist, & actually performed on the stage at Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen. While my husband was finishing college, I took additional classes in Piano Pedagogy & studied piano & percussion at Drake University.
I have been a piano teacher for over 35 years, & my true passion is teaching & helping others enjoy making music. I have taught students from kindergarten age up through adults & enjoy working with all skill levels.
Every student is an individual, with their own abilities & goals, so I strive to provide a learning experience that is tailored to their needs. I feel that it is important to have a good understanding of the core basics of music, especially rhythm & note reading, for a student to truly be successful at making music. These concepts are a major part of how & what I teach, in an environment that balances structure & fun.
Ultimately it is my goal to help my students develop an appreciation of music, regardless of what vocation they choose for themselves as adults. Learning to play an instrument, & studying the concepts of music, not only helps students do better in school, but can also help maintain cognitive functions & provide a source of relaxation on through our adult years.
